The extension of the Seinäjoki Public Library and Provincial Library, Apila (’Clover’), was opened to the public in August 2012. The library building is located adjacent to the cultural and administrative centre designed by Alvar Aalto.

The library was designed by JKMM Architects from Helsinki. The library is also the provincial library in Southern Ostrobothnia. There are almost 60 000 inhabitants in Seinäjoki and the city is large in surface area. Collections in the main library consist of 250 000 items.

The Seinäjoki City Library was one of four projects shortlisted for the first Finlandia Prize, which will be awarded every three years to a project either by a Finnish architect or built in Finland.
